Use Performance and Management of Biodegradable Fluids as Transformer Insulation

In recent years, the use of biodegradable fluids as liquid insulation for distribution and power transformers is spreading. The main used are natural synthetic esters, although hydrocarbons have been recently proposed. Biodegradable a much lower environmental impact than mineral oil, limiting risk soil contamination in leaks, which makes them suitable solution applications such offshore or railway transformers. Additionally, these higher flash point conventional oils, dramatically reduces fire collateral damage derived from explosion fire. Despite advantageous factors, there still some aspects that hinder broadening their use, difference thermal properties lack accepted maintenance procedures insulation.
